Fire Warden Training Course Online

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 states that the employer or owner is responsible for fire safety in their premises but may appoint a 'competent' person, such as a fire warden, to assist in ensuring adequate fire safety procedures are implemented.

They may also help develop the emergency plan and assist in carrying out a fire risk assessment alongside their expected duties, such as executing the evacuation plan and communicating with emergency services upon arrival.

The Regulatory Order also requires that where persons are appointed to assist, they must be provided with suitable training.

Our RoSPA-approved online fire marshal course is a quick and efficient way of ensuring that your fire warden(s) is competent in handling fire safety procedures and certified to do so.

You may also wish for them to undergo Fire Safety Training Courses for a more general understanding of how they can help prevent a fire from breaking out. We also provide workplace fire safety training online.

Please note: This e-learning course only provides awareness education. Face-to-face training would be needed in addition in order to complete the all-round skills and knowledge to be able to carry this forward practically in your organisation.

How Often Should Fire Marshal Training Be Refreshed?

In the UK, there is no specific legal requirement for how often fire marshal training should be refreshed. However, it is generally recommended that fire marshals receive annual refresher courses and updates to ensure they are fully knowledgeable about the latest fire safety procedures and practices.

Refresher training should be considered in light of any changes to your building, fire safety regulations, or new guidance and good practices. It is also important to update training after any incidents or near-misses.

What’s The Difference Between Fire Marshals and Fire Wardens?

The terms Fire Marshal and Fire Warden are often used interchangeably, but their roles and responsibilities can differ depending on the workplace and the fire safety protocols in place.

That said, in many workplaces, the distinction between these roles is minimal, and individuals may be referred to as either a Fire Marshal or Fire Warden, depending on the employer’s preference. Regardless of the title, anyone appointed to these roles must undergo appropriate training to ensure they are competent and prepared for their duties.

Below, we outline the key distinctions to help you better understand the technical differences and duties to ensure your organisation’s fire safety compliance.

Fire Marshals

A Fire Marshal is typically responsible for effectively implementing and maintaining fire safety measures. Their duties may include:

  • Conducting fire risk assessments
  • Overseeing the maintenance of fire safety equipment
  • Developing and reviewing fire safety policies and evacuation procedures
  • Coordinating with external fire safety authorities, such as the fire brigade

Fire Wardens

A Fire Warden, on the other hand, is more focused on the practical execution of fire safety measures during daily operations and emergencies. Their responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring for fire hazards in the workplace and reporting them
  • Assisting with fire drills and emergency evacuations
  • Helping employees and visitors evacuate the premises safely during a fire
  • Ensuring their designated area is clear and reporting to the Incident Controller or Fire Marshal

Whether you’re appointing a Fire Marshal or Fire Warden or aren’t worried at all about the terminology but need someone to organise fire safety arrangements, suitable training is a legal requirement to ensure they can fulfil their responsibilities effectively. At Safety Services Direct, we offer flexible online fire safety training to empower your team with the knowledge and skills they need to safeguard your workplace.
